Wellness Wednesdays = Caffeine & The Brain

Is Caffeine A Seizure Trigger?

First off certain amounts of caffeine can be found in certain foods and medications, not just in drinks that we think of when we talk about caffeine. We have to remember that anyone could have adverse health effects to caffeine. This is why speaking to a dietician and or health professional is best when it comes to your individual situation.

According to the National Institutes Of Health, caffeine is a stimulant, meaning it does increase activity in your brain and nervous system. It also at the same time decreases cerebral blood flow, inducing a relative brain hyperfusion, while also changing the gray matter in the brain. This can cause some issues with seizure activity, people with dementia, high blood pressure, sleep disorders and other conditions.

On the flip side, research shows some caffeine levels are positive in the body, in moderation. It can improve concentration levels, energy, improve mood, limit depression and increase well-being.

My Situation With Epilepsy Caffeine is NOT a Trigger

My medical professionals years ago had me go without any caffeine for an entire month. I was a daily Coke Zero drinker (I worked very early hours at this time) but this also inculded my dark chocolate...you can imagine I was struggling mentally.

Thank goodness my seizure threshold did not change in me, even with no caffeine and change of medications. I obviosly wanted to find out if it was a trigger and then I could possibly get my siezures controlled but at the same time my body and my mental character craved my caffeine!

I now stop caffeine by a certain time of night and I drink less than I did before to hopefully sleep better. I also take a vitamin B12 tablet (3000MCG) because, like many others on epilepsy medications, I feel tired all the time. Also very important, I drink LOTS of water!

Why Caffeine Talk On Wellness Wednesdays And Not Did You Know Mondays

I chose this because your diet can place a huge factor on some individuals, this is a dimension of Wellness. I wanted to show what I discovered in my epilepsy situation. So that you don't always assume you can't enjoy caffeine and also know it is in food and also some medications. Depression is very common those living with epilepsy, so if caffeine in certain amounts might help myself and others with that and our energy levels along with some brain function, pass it on.
