Wellness Wednesdays Also Means Being Connected/Social

Having a Social life or feeling connection with people is important! This is very important for those living with uncontrolled Epilepsy.

Two special KY friends met through our sons' baseball, down in FL.

Their families were part of that network I needed in KY,

and have kept that even with our move.

Epilepsy Foundation Facts according to their website: "a few"

*Individuals with active epilepsy are 3x more prone to have some form of depression, vs individuals without epilepsy. Some of this is due to where the area of the brain where epilepsy and depression occur.

*The actual medications helping control the seizures, can trigger mood disorders

*Living with challenges such as: stigma of epilepsy, fear of letting people know they have epilepsy(friends/work), financial troubles, loss of relationships due to unpredictable seizures, changes in work/school(bullying)

*Suicide rates: are said to be 2.6 to 5x higher than the general population

The Facts listed above is WHY positive social network is vital!

Yes, I have lived blessed with epilepsy for many years as a wife, mother, daughter, sibling friend, colleague etc. But I I always had at least my feeling of belonging by holding down a career, and contributing to the family. Yes, I had my months of driving and not driving, sick days etc.but I still had that to hold onto to show my family and others I was strong even with uncontrolled epilepsy.

It wasn't until February 2019 I felt everything changed when I had to medically retire because the seizures were placing myself and collegues at risk. I had already lost my feeling of independance by not being able to drive since 2012, and now this was being taken away too. Fast forward.........

December 2019 I have my surgery to replace my RNS battery and fix a cord that had broken. Along with that change our family was moving to FL, my husband had an opportunity at UWF and we moved. It also made it easier for Mayo appoinments, all my immediate family lived in various parts of FL, the only hard part was it was so late in boys HS years, and all our friends too left behind. COVID hit.....explanis alot there.

Then what Brent had always told me the move would be hardest on me and he was right. (as a mom I was more worried for our young men) Sure i was blessed to meet new few great friends(but obviously they have work/family too) .

We quickly became empty nesters, and so I quickly became alone during day hours. Can't leave the house by myself, and no public transportation that would be safe. I quickly became an introvert from an extrovert personality.

So MyGlitch Blog created!

It has created a way for me to meet others living with epilepsy or others reaching out newly diagnosed family etc. by helping others, I was in turn boosting my own self esteem. I feel that new purpose to help others, my new calling and a new network of individuals who can relate. So please keep spreading the word!!

I’m so grateful you have been blessed with such consistent support/relationships.

Technology is a vital part of connecting like-minded people facing the same challenges. Keep going! This community needs your heart & voice💜

I truly believe technology as well can be used for the greater good and not always for "bad things". Yes, boundaries need to be set for things, but when others like myself cannot leave their house during the day without a driver, technology is how we connect. Much love back for all you are doing for your community. 💜❤️
