From here on out Wednesdays will be
designated to a certain dimension of Wellness
(please note my information is my own. Yes some from
my college education & previous career opportunities, but
please always consult with a doctor on certain dimensions)
This can not only help those living with epilepsy, but for anyone. This also allows me to share what I do to help myself deal with day to day things, plus get back to my old roots of working with personal training clients and or worksite wellness:)
Calming/sleep Meditations
When we learned my nocturnal seizures had gotten worse, Brent and I decided we should try something new, for me to try and relax if possible at night. During the day I was already practicing breathing techniques to calm my body during my "aware seizures".
We already knew its hard for me to sleep as it is, but maybe calming the brain beforehand can help. It just so happened that Peloton was having a Meditation Sleep Program, you would meditate at bedtime for 20 minutes.(so that helped, adding to the Peloton family competition while trying to help myslef) Plus for those living with epilepsy, sleep is of the up most importance to help control their epilepsy.
I must admit this was not an easy task for me. I had to learn to try and shut my brain completely down. You will see if you decide to try either calming or sleeping meditation aps, some instructors will have you repeat certain words to keep your mind in the present and not drift off to our daily worries/thoughts, and or music in the background. I learned that starting with shorter meditations helped me stay alert to the actual meditation and not drift off to something on my mind.
Epilepsy brain did forget to define to you What is Meditation by defintion? (my apologies on that)
Mayo Clinic defintion: "an umbrella term for many ways to achieve a relaxed state of being. There are many types of meditations, and relaxtion techniques that have meditation compomenents. All share the same goal of achieving inner peace." I would encourage you to log onto mayoclinic.org and look at the MANY types of meditations that people utilize and see what works best for your individual situation. Back before my seizures became more complicated when I taught Yoga, we would end with meditation. Giving the choice of laying down or sitting up, you want to do what's most comfortable for your given situation.
**I would also encourage you to go follow my sister-in-law on IG dianadevaul.writer of Amelia Island. She focuses on going Inward & Onward in her blog with focus on various ways of meditation.**
